FPTPayments is a USDA-funded research program designed to better understand how US agricultural producers value payments at different times. We all value money today more than money in the future, but by how much? To answer this question, we are asking 500 U.S. agricultural producers to make a series of choices about how they would prefer to receive sums of money. There are no right or wrong answers. Your individual answers will never be publicized or shared with anyone – we're interested in describing average choices of U.S. producers. Your participation will help us achieve this goal.

About the Program

What you will be asked

Would you rather have $750 next week or $800 in six months? This is the kind of question we will ask you. There are no right or wrong answers, but you should think carefully about each question because you may be paid your choice. Read below about the incentives to participate to learn more.

We know your time and attention are valuable. To encourage you to take the questions seriously, you will pay you for participating. Additionally, ten percent of participants (50) will also be paid based on their decisions. In other words, if you are one of the fifty people chosen, you could be paid up to several thousand dollars, on top of your payment for completing the study. Dr. Collin Weigel will be dedicated to ensuring you receive the correct payments at the correct dates in the future, and will send you a replacement card if you lose yours. Learn more on our payments page.

Incentives to Participate

Your Prepaid Visa Card

When you participate, you receive your payment on a prepaid Visa card, which is used like a credit or debit card. If you lose your card, don't worry. Just give us a call and we will send you a replacement card, free of charge. To learn more about your prepaid Visa card, visit out payments page.

The Research Team

The team is made up of economists from top universities who work together with CBEAR to inform agriculture policies by connecting with farmers. Our research provides guidance to the USDA to create programs that better meet farmers' needs. We are Maria Bernedo, Paul Ferraro, and Collin Weigel. You are welcome to contact us.

CBEAR

The Center for Behavioral Experimental and Agri-Environmental Research is a USDA-funded consortium of more than a dozen land-grant and research universities. We are tasked with improving policies by making them better fit the needs of farmers and ranchers across the U.S. CBEAR's work reaches across a variety of agricultural contexts, such as feral hog control, abandoned poultry house removal, erosion-reducing technologies, and much more.
